Article from Elinor

Fuel prices are rising, regional trains are overflowing with weekenders, and the airports are in pure chaos. But we don’t let the situation deprive us of our desire to travel and instead take our camper on a voyage of discovery on our own doorstep.

For adventure, relaxation and travel feeling, you don’t always have to go far away. And sights and attractions can also be found outside of the big city.
We have picked out the best leisure tips and destinations around Leipzig especially for you, which you can easily reach from our Leipzig location with a single tank of gas. Most of our models have a capacity of 80 liters. If you drive in an environmentally friendly manner, you can travel over 900 (!) kilometers with this. Not only are you saving yourself a lot of stress this way, you are also going easy on your wallet.
Local travel is good for your wallet, better for the environment than long-distance travel and, as a nice side effect, it also supports the regional economy and tourism industry – and you don’t have to do without variety and new impressions either. No place like home, after all.
No matter if you feel like doing water sports, the next family vacation is coming up or you just want to take a long walk around the lake: These places in the Leipzig area offer something for every taste.

9 destinations around Leipzig you can reach with a full tank

Cooling off: Water sports at the canoe park on Lake Markkleeberg

Around 60 kilometers from our Leipzig location lies the canoe park Markkleeberg. Here, water rats and adventurers can really let off steam: White water rafting, bodyboarding and surfing courses are just a part of the wide range of activities on offer. For experienced paddlers, the canoe park offers a whitewater kayak school, but beginners with no previous experience will also get their money’s worth at the park thanks to the wide range of possibilities.
Camping tip: The park itself does not offer any camping sites, but you can make yourself comfortable at several campsites in the immediate vicinity, such as Camping Neuseenland. And if you don’t fancy campsites, you can organize a private pitch nearby via providers such as MyCabin.

Trip to the Great Goitzschee Lake

The Great Goitzschee Lake is located near the city of Bitterfeld. Not only water sports enthusiasts will be happy here, but also nature lovers and recreation seekers will feel right at home at this lake in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to several bathing spots, beaches and water sports facilities, you will also find a well-developed network of hiking and biking trails around the lake, and those who like it very comfortable can sail across the lake on a passenger or pirate ship or even a catamaran. You can enjoy a breathtaking view of the region from the Pegelturm, the Roter Turm or the Bitterfelder Bogen.
Camping tip: For camping, the Goitzsche Camping and Holiday Park is very close to the lake.

City trip to Weimar

The cultural and university city of Weimar, the fourth largest city in Thuringia, is located about 140 kilometres from Leipzig-Halle. Particularly because of the city’s cultural heritage you’ll not only find tons of university students here but also numerous tourists who flock here year after year. The cute student town is a real must-see for fans of the Weimar Classicism and culture enthusiasts in general. In addition to the homes of Goethe and Schiller a variety of museums, castles, the German National Theater and a charming old town that invites you to stroll await your visit here.
Camping tip: Unfortunately, it is not easy to find a campsite in the immediate vicinity of Weimar’s city center – from the Weimar-Tiefurt campsite however, you only need about 15 minutes by bike to get to the city or you can take the local city bus line to get there quite comfortably.

Hike to the Karl May Cave

If you like to be more sporty on your vacation this might just be the place for you: The so-called Karl May Cave in the Oberwald forest of Hohenstein-Ernstthal can be reached via a hiking trail that is about 12 kilometres long and classified as moderately difficult. The former robbers’ cave and place of refuge of the eponym on the run from the police is just one highlight of many on the idyllic route through the forest – but beware the cave itself is quite wet and therefore slippery so cave explorers should be warned.
Camping tip: In Hohenstein-Ernstthal the camping site Stausee Oberwald is especially suitable for your overnight stay. The spacious area is connected to a public lido, ideal conditions for cooling-off during the summer!

Idyllic camping on the Mulde river

The Mulde flows through the North German Lowlands and is then dammed in the Muldestausee before finally joining the Elbe. It's wonderful to camp near the reservoir, whether on a privately rented site or on the beautiful green campsite Heide in close proximity to the water. At the lake itself you will find opportunities for the typical water sports activities as well as leisurely walks or hikes or maybe you prefer a detour to the Café Seeklause?
Camping tip: Just a stone’s throw away is the Great Goitzschee Lake – in just one trip you can reach not one but two of our top destinations in no time.

Living history and fairytale feeling at Püchau Castle

The picturesque Püchau Castle near Leipzig may look familiar to some. Several German Tatort productions and other series and film productions have already been filmed at the historic castle. But not only the film industry has discovered the vivid castle for itself, year after year numerous wedding celebrations take place here. Those who are not arriving to shoot a movie or have a wedding can explore the grounds either on their own or on a guided tour. Püchau Castle also regularly hosts special events such as the Ascension Day picnic in the picturesque castle park or atmospheric Advent readings including Arcadian poetry.
Camping tip: You can’t camp on the castle grounds but only 10 minutes away by car is the Lübschützer Teiche campground – here you can camp right by the beautiful Sahlweiden pond.

High above in the climbing forest Lützen

Action for those free of giddiness: Only about 40 kilometres away from our location is the Kletterwald Lützen. With 79 climbing elements and different routes depending on how difficult or adventurous you want it to be everyone will find something fun to do here and can swing through airy heights, prove balancing skills and much more. The perfect destination for families travelling with children!
Camping tip: About 15 minutes by car from the climbing forest is the campsite at Kulkwitzer See. Due to the great location directly at the lake you have the opportunity to cool down after your sweaty forest adventure.

Castle and museum in one: The baroque castle Delitzsch

The baroque castle of Delitzsch is located not far from Leipzig and awaits you with historic rooms from the 18th century, a lovingly landscaped baroque garden and a large selection of exhibited objects. The history of the castle dates back to the 14th century and still has some secrets in store to be uncovered or visited – for example, the tubular bunker built under the baroque garden. In addition to the duchesses’ rooms and the beautiful garden you can also visit the former women’s penitentiary and the castle tower. There is a lot to discover here!
Camping tip: Only 20 minutes away by car you can, for example, stay at the Löbnitz campsite and benefit from its location directly on the Alte Mulde and close to the equally beautiful Seelhausen and Mühlfeld lakes.

Strawberry-picking at strawberry field Tautz

Strawberries simply taste better when you picked them yourself. How great that 45 minutes away from Leipzig the strawberry field Tautz in Leipzig-Großzschocher is waiting for you and your empty strawberry basket. Here you can collect fresh, delicious strawberries during the season and buy freshly harvested asparagus at the stand – perfect for the next dinner (including strawberry dessert) in your camper. Maybe a summery strawberry asparagus salad will soon be on your menu as well?
Camping tip: The campsites at Kulkwitzer See, Elsterstausee or Markkleebergsee are all easily reachable after your strawberry picking. A great opportunity to combine two or more destinations in one go!
